“Kia kairangi” speaks to the pursuit of excellence. Excellence is often linked to beauty, precision, and mastery, but reaching that point requires perseverance and learning through experience. I compare this journey to he kōtuku rerenga tahi, the single flight of the white heron. For Māori, the kōtuku is a powerful tohu, admired for its rarity and elegance. The whakataukī was traditionally used to honour distinguished visitors whose presence was uncommon and therefore precious. In today’s world, convenience often overshadows the value of true excellence. Yet, like the kōtuku, excellence can still be found by those willing to make the effort to wade through the metaphorical repo and awa, to persist, and to seek out what is rare and beautiful.
